TRON Legacy

tron_ducatiLast night, in preparation to watch TRON Legacy, I re-watched the original TRON film.  It seemed so much cooler when I saw it 25 years ago!  It’s a movie that didn’t age well, looking silly compared to film magic of today.  But TRON Legacy was awesome!  Yes, Sam (as Calvin pointed out) had lines that consisted of at most 5-word sentences, but he was sooo nice to look at, and the black and white and glow-suit imagery was visually exciting and very appealing, and the Daft Punk OST was fun, energizing, and fitting.  And I was super excited to see that Sam was riding my dream motorbike, a Ducati Sport Classic!

itunes-trailers-gallery-olivia_wilde_in_tron_legacy_jpg_9-28-2010I didn’t get to see it in 3D, due to technical difficulties. Sad smile  I will have to take the girls later in the week.  They were disappointed to hear I was going to the movie without them.  I didn’t think they would be interested in it, but they have been watching the previews on the Disney Channel, so that’s how they knew about it.  I think the tech talk will have them a little lost and confused, but there the story is easy enough to follow without understanding all of it.

The Adjustment Bureau

Matt Damon, a chick who runs in heels, a gripping love story, and a paranormal agency trying to keep the couple apart – it has to be cool!

I saw a trailer for this in the theatre not too long ago, but the release isn’t scheduled until March 2011.

Best movie I’ve seen in a long time

I saw Inception on Saturday night.  I heard from sources that you shouldn’t be late getting there, and don’t doze off or get up to leave the theatre, in other words, don’t miss a second of it, or you might get lost.

The movie wasn’t hard to watch.  The plot is simple.  Yes, if missed screen time then you might have missed something vital, but the movie was so engaging that I couldn’t see myself leaving my seat.  It is the underlying motive in the movie that will keep you thinking about it as you leave the theatre.  I had a few “I know what’s going to happen next” instances, but it didn’t spoil the movie.  The scene transitions were flawless and the acting was amazing.  It really is as brilliant as everyone is saying!

Plot summary from IMDB (without giving anything away):

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Push: one push can change everything

Back in October, we saw a trailer for a movie called Push.  It kind of  looked interesting, but seemed to be a Heroes rip-off.  At the time, I was done with Heroes, having not enjoyed the last season, with the constant infuse of new characters and then their quick kill offs.

Last night we finally watched Push and I could say that maybe the low expectation level made it all the more enjoyable, but I think that wouldn’t be accurate.

Right from the first scene it pulled you in.

It’s about a group of Americans (with psychic abilities), who are in Hong Kong and racing against a Chinese group (also possessing special abilities) and a US government agency (that wants to transform the special abilities into a super-army) to locate a special case.

There is a lot of character development but it’s presented in a gripping fashion.  I found the filing to be very interesting, with angles and shots that are non-traditional, but that didn’t make you dizzy.  The colours in the movie are also really neat.  I wish I had more technical words to use to describe it.

Angel's favourite movies

The boyfriend watches a lot of movies.  I don't watch very many.  I see trailers and say "Oh! I want to see that one!!" but in the end, months and months and months  go by, and I still haven't seen Ocean's Thirteen or The Departed (I love Matt Damon is my moviestar boyfriend) or 300 or 20 other movies I said I really wanted to see.

I am also impressed by how much detail he remembers from movies.  Usually I watch a movie and forget about it, whereas he can remember who acted, who directed, and all that.

I decided to try to compose a list of my favourite movies.  Here is what I came up with (in the order they came to me).

  • Garden State
  • Wristcutters
  • Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • Being John Malkovich
  • The Nines
  • The Princess Bride
  • Emma
  • Transformers
  • Vanilla Sky
  • The Matrix trilogy
  • The Bourne trilogy

Wristcutters: A Love Story

wristcuttersposter A boy, distraught after a breakup, cuts his wrists and ends up in an after-life world reserved for suicide victims, that is like the real world, only a little worse.  He discovers that his ex-girlfriend also offed herself.  Ah!  Hope in a hopeless world!! He and his new friend, a Russian rocker, set of on a road-trip across a very desolate land, where they meet some interesting characters, in search of her.

It's quirky and funny and as you watch them travelling to nowhere, you are captivated to find out where they will end up.  The boyfriend and I agree it is the best film we're seen in a long time.  In fact, I watched it again today.  I can't remember the last time I watched the same movie 2 days in a row, because I wanted to, and not because I fell asleep the first time.  I loved it just as much the second time around.

Bourne Again

We were watching movie trailers last night and when watching the one for the upcoming release of The Bourne Ultimatum, I was positive that I had not seen The Bourne Supremacy yet, which was very odd because I looove Matt Damon like Scott loves the girl from Metric.

I figured if I was going to watch the second movie, and then see the third in a couple of months, then I might as well watch the first one and get caught up from the beginning. So tonight I watched Identity... which I love! Then I started to watch Supermacy, and as soon as the truck goes in the water at the start of ther movie, I remembered that I HAD seen it before. I remember that the movie wasn't as good at the first one. I didn't like it much more the second time around, and especially after watching the two movies back to back, the second cannot compete with the first! None the less, I am looking forward to seeing Ultimatum when it comes out in August!!

So, what does it mean, to die?

About a month ago, Kev was raving about this movie, said I HAD to see it. I download it and was going to watch it but then got busy doing other things and then Cookie tells me he started watching it and it was good, so good that he didn't finish it so he rented it again the next weekend to watch it all the way through. Then a bunch of other people at work and stuff were talking about it... well I finally watched THE ILLUSIONIST and I LOVED IT. Thank you for the recommendation!!

Smokin' Aces

Last night I was coerced into seeing Smokin' Aces. Ok, ok, I admit, I ended up walking into the theatre voluntarily, but it wouldn't have been my movie of choice had I been asked to pick the flick. I figured with Ryan Reynolds and Matthew Fox and Ben Afflick I would at least get a little eye candy out of it, but sadly, the gentlemen were all covered with hideous facial hair!

Upon leaving the theatre, my initial assessment of the film was that I liked the ending, but the movies was overall pretty f'ed up and bloody. Today, I am thinking that the movie wasn't so bad after all. I mean, I sat through the entire film and not once felt the urge to check out the time to try to figure out how much longer the movie would be going on for. It kept me on my toes and there were not very many instances where I thought, Oh I know what's going to happen next. It was also really nice to be a theatre that wasn't full of kids (this movie carries an 18A rating).

Fateless

You can close your eyes. You can turn away. But you will never forget.

I saw a movie this weekend, Sorstalanság (Fateless).
Budapest 1944: it is a moving tale about a 14 year old Jewish boy as he is sent to to work in a brick camp and his bus is stopped and he is sent to Auschwitz and then later to Buchenwald. During this time, he comes to learn much about life and friends. The movie was visaully stimulating, as it was done in sepia, black and white, and coloured scenes to emphasize various moods. This movie is based on the contemporary novel by Nobel Prize winner Imre Kertész.

Like any movie about concentration camps that I have seen, it is depressing at times, and also very thought provoking. How can human beings treat other humans like that, and are we still guilty of such crimes against humanity. Ultimately the movie shows the unbelievable resilience of the human spirit.

C.R.A.Z.Y.

I watched a French Canadian film called C.R.A.Z.Y. Patsy Cline's Song Crazy unserscores the film and the title is made up of the initials of the 5 boys in the story (Christian, Raymond, Antoine, Zachary, Yvan). Zac is the main character, having been born on Christmas Day 1960, and dropped on his head by his father. heehee oops! His monther believes he has a gift for healing. His father balks at the idea of his son who plays dress up with his mothers clothes and desired a doll carriage for a present. Anyway, it's a story about the family, and it was good.

La Science des rêves

Michel Gondry, who directed of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, has a new movie out, La Science des rêves (The Science of Sleep), and I would like to see it.
"In Paris, a young man who has fallen in love with his neighbour learns to manipulate his dreams, until he gets caught up in them."
